My Kids Are Asleep

Hi! I'm Dana.

I’m a mom to two beautiful babies: One is an actual baby (Linnea, born in summer 2021) and one is a toddler who I still think of as a baby (Miles, born winter 2019). As I write this, Linnea is sleeping in her lounger on the couch next to me with her arms above her head in the touchdown position favored by so many babies. Miles is at daycare, most likely either repeating his two favorite words over and over — “MORE. MILK.” — or fighting with the other kids over a blue stuffed pig, inexplicably the favorite toy of everyone in the class.

Like so many of us, I’m a perfectly imperfect mom. Sure, I feed my toddler cookies for breakfast sometimes (okay FINE more than sometimes), but I also dance with him to “Happy and You Know It” 15 times a day and take him on mother-son dates every weekend.

This is a place to share my experiences and express my feelings about being a mother. My goal is to be honest about what it has been like to raise a baby, then bring another into the mix just as the first one is entering tantrum town. When I was a few months pregnant with my second baby, I challenged myself to write something about motherhood every single day. Sometimes it’s one sentence, sometimes it’s a full-blown essay, and it’s almost always written when they’re asleep. On this website, I’m sharing my favorites. Topics range from my anxiety around breastfeeding to what it’s really like to take toddlers to the pumpkin patch (TLDR: the actual opposite of what it looks like on Instagram).

Hello and welcome to my world.
