Kids are better than us. They just are. Sure, they throw tantrums a lot and they need help with everything which gets kind of old, but also: They’re cuter, they’re more fun, they see the joy in anything, and they get excited about everything.
I watch my nine-month-old daughter’s delight at playing peekaboo or seeing the dog walk around the corner, and I find myself wishing I could be more like her. Then I watch my two-year-old son’s pure joy at putting on his fire-truck t-shirt in the morning or going down a slide, and I have the same feeling.
In that vein, here’s a selection of things that have brought my son joy over the last few weeks. I wish I could get as excited about literally anything as my two year old gets about:
- Unloading spoons from the dishwasher
- Unloading knives from the dishwasher (I promise I don’t condone this behavior) (I stop him as soon as I notice) (It’s not the sharp knives; it’s the butter knives)
- Eating with the same color spoon as the baby
- Getting flipped upside down
- Say good morning to the dog
- Giving the dog a bath
- Pulling the dog’s hair (sorry dog) (I promise it’s not on purpose) (I promise I stop him as soon as I notice)
- Filling a cup with water
- Even better: Filling three cups with water
- Putting lids on three cups of water
- Drinking from three cups of water with lids on them
- Putting three cups in the dishwasher when they’re empty of water
- Seeing a school bus in the wild
- Even better: Seeing a dump truck out the front window
- Paw Patrol string cheese
- Sitting in the cart at the grocery store
- Having your purple stuffed monster sit next to you in the cart at the grocery store
- Getting let out of the cart at the grocery store and walking down the aisles on two feet
- Driving by the fire station
- Seeing a fire truck pull out at the exact time you drive by the fire station … I have to end on this one because IT DOESN’T GET ANY BETTER THAN THAT
